Suriname’s Issam Asinga smashed the World U20 Record at the South American Athletics Outdoor Championships held on Friday (28) in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The 18 year-old who led from the gun to tape left his competitors in awe as he brought down Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo’s previous record of 9.91 that he set last year in Cali with a new World U20 record of 9.89.
Asinga who was born in United States but relocated to Suriname with his parents was followed by Brazil’s Erik Cardoso who set a new National Record and a personal best of 9.97 seconds becoming the first South American to dip under the ten second in legal conditions. Colombia’s Ronal Mosquera wrapped up the podium three places with a new National Record and a personal best of 9.99.
