Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario has been released after buying his freedom after paying a fine imposed by Nairobi court for misusing Rio de Janeiro 2016.
The Anti-corruption magistrate Elizabeth Juma said the Prosecution had proven Wario had a role in the embezzlement of funds allocated to the National Olympic committee of Kenya (NOCK) to oversee the welfare of Kenyan representatives to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Wario was fined Ksh3.6 million in the afternoon Anti-corruption magistrate court Magistrate found guilty of abusing his office.
But in a few hours, Wario was set free after paying the fine and avoiding to be jailed for six years as the judgment was read out by the Magistrate.
His co-accuser and former Olympics team leader and ex-Nock Stephen Arap Soi, has been fined Sh105 million, or he is to serve 12 years in prison in default
Soi sought to have his sentence and fine suspended pending appeal but the court declined.
On Wednesday, Juma said Wario took advantage of his office by sending Adan Enow, Richard Abura and Monica Sairo to the Rio games. Their improper trip to Brazil resulted in a loss of public funds
