Ethiopia’s Fantaye Belayneh Azale wrote her name in the history books in the Women 10km Road to Records Race that was held on Saturday (30) Herzogenaurach, Germany.
The 21 year-old who is a 5,000m specialist with zero experience on the road race gave her all to beat a strong field that included the Kenya reigning National Cross Country champion, Joyce Tele and Sheila Chepkirui the African Champion.
Azale came to this race with a personal best of 14:44.51 that she got at the 2021 Ethiopian National trials in the 5,000m race where she finished in position six. She waited patiently until the one kilometer mark to make her move with a super lightening speed and held on to set a new Ethiopian National Record and New personal best of 30:25.
Azale was followed by Tele who came to this race with the fastest time on paper of 30:59.01 that she got at the 2021 FBK Games, in Netherlands when she came home in second place in a time of 30:33 with Chepkirui closing the podium three finishes in 30:35.
