The 2018 European 5,000m silver medallist, Eilish McColgan became the fifth European all-time 10,000m runner as she ran from the gun-to-tape at the Fanny Blankers-Koen Games held on Monday (06) in Hengelo, Netherland.
The 31 year-old set her eyes on the Paula Radcliffe’s long-standing British National Record of 30:01.09 that was set in 2002 in Munich as she slipped off record pace in the second half, erasing the old Scottish record set by her mother Liz of 30:57.07 with a new record of 30:19.09. This time makes her the fifth fastest European in history behind Sifan Hassan of 29:06.82, Radcliffe of 30:01.09, Lornah Kiplagat (30:12.53) and Ingrid Kristiansen (30:13.74), all of whom won global titles in their careers.
The 2017 European Indoor bronze medallist defeated the world record holder for the 5000m and 10,000m Letesenbet Gidey from Ethiopia who came home a distant second in 30:44.27 with her compatriot reigning World Indoor bronze medallist Ejgayehu Taye coming in third in 30:44.68
