Kenya’s Edwin Kimaiyo will be the man to watch at the 37th edition of the Generali Munich Marathon scheduled on October 08, 2023 in Munich, Germany.
The 37 year-old who comes to this race with a personal best time of 2:09.12 that he got five years ago at the Shanghai International Marathon where he finished in fourth, returns to Munich with the advantage of knowing the course after finishing in fifth place last year with a time of 2:11.02. Kimaiyo who is the most experienced on the line-up, took a fine third place in the 2011 Berlin Marathon with a time of 2:09.50. It was during this race in which his compatriot Patrick Makau broke the then world record of 2:03.38.
Kimaiyo will not have an easy ride as he will have to get past his compatriot Cosmas Kiplimo who will be making his fourth appearance over the distance, carrying a life time best of 2:09.44 that he got last year during his debut at the Linz Marathon, where he finished in eleventh place. The 25 year-old who is in a shape of his life-time comes to this race with a season best of 2:10.44 that he got in April at the Geneva Marathon where he took the bronze medal.
German will have their hopes on Sebastian Hendel who will be returning to the Bavarian capital after his debut last year where he set a personal best of 2:10.37 for a fourth place finish. This spring the 27 year-old clocked 2:11:29 at the Vienna City Marathon in unusually warm conditions.
“In 2022 we successfully came back with international elite racing and it is now our aim to further establish our position at this higher level. Last year’s course records proved that our course is not only very attractive regarding the sightseeing features but very fast as well. A marathon weekend trip to Munich is definitely worth it, “said Race Director Gernot Weigl.
The race organisers have assembled a strong elite field to try and chase the race course record of 2:07.28 that was set last year by Philemon Kipchumba from Kenya.
