Athletics Kenya (AK) intensified its war against doping by forming a multi sectoral oversight body to oversee the campaign.
The local governing athletics body said in the fight against the doping menace it has decided to bring on board other agencies which provide their input in their areas specialization in complementing each to assist AK weed out the use of banned performance enhancing drugs.
“Despite our war against doping it was disappointed that more cases of Kenyans doping were coming to necessitate the change of tact,” said AK president Jackson Tuwei.
The oversight body known as the anti-doping advisory committee has brought on board institutions which include Criminal Investigations Departments (CID), Kenya Police Anti-Narcotics, Ministry of Health through the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, Ministry of Interior through the Immigration department, Attorney General, Media Council, Council of Governors (CoG) and Ministry of Education.
Tuwei said Athletics Kenya will also have a representation in the committee where they will co-opt three other members from institutions which will have been left out and yet their input is necessary.
“We are using this approach so that professionals from diverse professions can bring their expertise and experience which can be put together to come up with tangible and workable effective measures.
The president the committee will come up with ways of curbing the vice and give the necessary recommendations to the government and AK for implementation
He said they have done outreach and awareness campaigns, punished offenders but their efforts have not produced the desired results.
He said it unfortunate that Kenya is still in category one on the watch list whereas concerted efforts need to be taken to save Kenya’s reputation of winning clean.
