The 2018 World U20 800m champion, Diribe Welteji from Ethiopia thought she had finished the 3000m race at the Meeting de l’Eure, a World Athletics Indoor Tour Silver level meeting held on Sunday (05), but in reality, she still had one lap remaining.
The 20 year-old completely stopped and even sat down on the track before discovering she had one more lap after one of the meet officials reminded her she had one whole lap to go. The 2019 African U20 1500m champion returned to the race and still ran a World leading time of 8:33.43.
The duration that she stopped cost her about 10 seconds. If she did not make that mistake, she could have finished with a top-10 all-time result.
🇪🇹 Diribe Welteji stoppe son effort 200 m avant la ligne d’arrivée, avant de repartir pour finalement l’emporter en 8’33”44, meilleure performance mondiale de l’année sur 3000 m ! 😯🔥
