Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet gave Kenya her first gold medal when she won the 5000m women race at the ongoing World U20 Championships that is happening in Tampere Stadium in Finland.
Chebet became the first Kenyan woman to win this race as she cut the tape with a personal best of 15:30.77.
The Lodiani based athlete was appearing for Kenya for the third time after she finished fourth in the 3,000m at the World Under-18 Championships and ninth during the Africa Cross Country Championships in March this year.
“I am happy to win the gold medal for my country,” said Chebet. “It was tough racing the two Ethiopians as they are strong but I had a good fight with them.”
The Kenyan was closely followed by Ethiopia’s Ejgayehu Taye who crossed the line in a personal best of 15:30.87. Girmawit Gebrzhihair also from Ethiopia closed the podium finish in also a PB of 15:34.01.
Uganda’s Sarah Chelangat and Hellen Ekarare Lobun form Kenya finished in fourth and fifth place in 15:43.01 and 15:45.07 respectively.
