Kenya’s Caroline Chebet Korir broke the race course record of the 29th edition of the Azpeitia Diego Garcia Memorial half Marathon that was held on Saturday (26) in Azkoiti City in Spain.
The 27 year-old who came to this race as an underdog on paper with a personal best of 1:11.50 proved too strong to handle to her opponents who could not match her strength.
Korir battled with two Ethiopians, Anchinalu Dessie Genaneh and Ayanadis Mebratu Tadesse for the better part of the race but neither of them could keep up with her pace in the last one kilometer as she forged ahead with powerful strides to cut the tape and shed off almost four minutes to her previous best setting a new personal best and course record of 1:07.57.
Genaneh was forced to settle in second place with a time of 1:08.53 while her compatriot Tadesse closed the podium three finishes in 1:09.29.
Another Ethiopia Kalkidan Fentie Debeb and Laura Mendez Esquer from Spain finished in fourth and fifth place in a time of 1:12.04 and 1:13.16 respectively.
This race was held in remembrance of two athletes Alejandro Gómez and Ione Basterra who made AzkoitiAzpeitia great.
