Israel’s Blessing Akawasi Afrifah pulled a surprise defeat as he punished Letsile Tebogo from Botswana on day four of the World Athletics U20 Championships being held in Cali, Colombia.
The 18 year-old who has had a superb performance with three consecutive personal bests of 20.37, 20.17 and then setting the championship record with a time of 19.96. This time moved Afrifah and Tebogo to a joint third on the world U20 all-time list.
The 18-year-old, born in Israel to West African parents, stayed close behind Tebogo coming round the bend and a late surge to deny the 19-year-old a second world U20 title after his 100m win two days earlier. The athletes wrote history as the first 200m to break World U20 20 seconds mark.
