United States Betsy Saina endured the harsh weather patterns to run away with the WOmen’s title at the 22nd edition of the Blackmores Sydney Marathon held on Sunday (17) in Sydney, Australia.
The 35 year-old who changed her nationality two years ago to represent USA, came to this race with the fastest time on paper of 2:21.40 that she got early this year at the Tokyo Marathon where she finished in fifth place.
The 2012 Africa 10,000m bronze medallist went through the halfway mark in 1:142.22 and then ran a negative in the second half in 1:12.24 as she withstood the temperatures which had hit the roof to 30C, cutting the tape in her fifth fastest time of 2:26.46.
Saina was followed closely in second by Ethiopia’s Rahman Tusa Chota who crossed the finish line six seconds later with Kenya’s Gladys Chesir Kiptagelai wrapping up the podium three finishes in a time of 2:28.41.
