World Cross Country champion, Beatrice Chebet defended her women title at the 19th edition of Cross Internacional de Atapuerca held on Sunday in Atapuerca, Spain.
The 23 year-old who is also the reigning Commonwealth Games 5000m champion beat strong elite field that included the 2018 African Youth Games 3000m Silver medallist, Sarah Chelengat from Uganda, the 2019 African U20 silver medallist, Edinah Jebitok and Ethiopia’s Likina Amebaw who a fortnight ago won the Cross Internacional Zornotza, the first Gold event of this season.
Chebet took charge of the race in the final stages of the race as she dropped Amebaw and Chelangat gasping for air as she forged ahead solo to cut the tape in a time of 25:21.
The reigning Africa 5000m champion was followed by the Uganda’s 5000m National record holder in 24:36 with Jebitok sealing the podium three finishes in 25:44.
Amebaw, Great Britain’s Megan Keith and cross country specialist, Lucy Maiwa from Kenya finished in fourth, fifth and sixth in respective time of 26:06.26:39 and 26:54.
