Athletics Kenya ordered to clear Celliphine Chespol to enable her to travel

Sports Disputes Tribunal has ordered Athletics Kenya (AK) to issue a clearance letter to Celliphine Chespol to enable her travel Rome, Italy for a leg of the fourth leg of the Diamond League meeting .

Chespol risks missing the Diamond League series for the second time this season in the absence of this letter which will facilitate her to get her Visa to Italy. The teenager is scheduled to travel to Italy on May 28.

“AK should immediately issue the relevant clearance letter allowing the applicant (Chespol) to process a visa and travel to Italy to participate in the 2018 IAAF Diamond League Golden Gala,” the SDT’s orders read in part.

Chespol, who boosts the second all-time fastest run (8:58.78) in the discipline, found herself at crossroads after signing contracts with two athlete representatives/ managers running concurrently, making it hard for AK to issue a clearance letter.

She entered into a contract with Owen Andersen as her manager in March 2018, but she had not formerly terminated her contract with Mark Corstjens penned in 2016.

Chespol’s counsel, Sarah Ochwadah had told the Tribunal that AK Nairobi branch chairman, Barnabas Korir, had allegedly offered undue influence to World U20 3,000m steeplechase record holder, Chespol to sign with Corstjens as her manager in 2016.

Ochwadah intimated that her client was put in contract with Corstjens under undue influence and duress by Korir as a school-going 16-year old.

With the mention of Korir before the sitting panel of SDT’s vice chairperson Eleanah Shiveka (chair), lawyer Robert Asembo and Ms. Maria Kimani, the Tribunal implored  the AK official and any other interested person to formerly seek enjoinment.

“Any interested party desirous of being enjoined in the proceedings to should file suitable application,” read the order.
