The Head of Anti-Doping at the Athletics Kenya Charlotte Kurgoy has confirmed that many athletes turned away from collecting their running bibs at the concluded Kenya National Trials for the World Athletics Championships slated for 19-27 August in Budapest, Hungary.
Ms Kurgoy was speaking during the workshop hosted by the Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya (Adak) and Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (Sjak) on Friday in Mombasa, said that many athletes in middle and long distance runners evaded the national trials.
“At the national trials, we had stringent measures to test many athletes before the race. We asked all athletes to come and collect their bibs and many did not show up,” she said.
Kurgoy added that the majority of the said runners belonged to middle and long distance running.
“Some pretended to be picking phone calls but vanished in thin air while some gave excuses that they had competed at the Nairobi City marathon. Interestingly others said they picked injuries hence pulling out because of numerous reasons. Kurgoy concluded.
