Ethiopia’s Asrar Abderehman broke the course record at the 37th edition of the Seville Marathon that was held on Sunday (20) in Seville, Spain.
Abderehman took charge of the race at the 35km and never looked back as he surged ahead and erased the previous record by three seconds. The previous record of 1:04.46 had been set by Mekuant Ayenew also from Ethiopia in 2020.
Abderehman came to this race with a personal best of 2:07.33 that he got last year at the Amsterdam Marathon where he finished in twelfth position. The Ethiopia led a 1-2 podium finish as he cut the tape in a new personal best and course record of 2:04.43 taking off more than three minutes from his previous pb.
He was followed by Adeladlew Mamo who was making his marathon debut crossing the line in second in a new personal best of 2:05.11 with the 2015 World Marathon Champion Ghirmay Ghebreslassie from Eritrea closing the podium three finishes also with a new personal best of 2:05.33
