Ethiopia’s Andualem Belay Shiferaw wrote his name in history books as he broke his own course record at the 36th edition of the Lisbon Marathon held on Sunday (09) in Lisbon, Portugal.
The 30 year-old becomes the second athlete after Vasco Azevedo from Portugal (2009,2010,2011) to win the race three times consecutively and also breaking his own record of 2:05.52 that he set last year year with a new course record of 2:05.45.
Shiferaw led 1-2-3 Ethiopian podium finish as he was followed by Haftu Teklu Asefa who was making his debut over the distance in second place in a personal best of 2:06.33 with the 2013 World junior team Cross Country Champion Birhanu Nebebew Tesfay closing the podium three finishes in a time of 2:07.04
Reigning Enschede Marathon champion Julius Kipkorir Tuwei from Kenya who was among the race favorite finished a distant fourth in 2:08.23 with Tsedat Abeje Ayana coming home in fifth in 2:08.32.
