The 2021 World U20 3,000m steeplechase champion Amos Serem has set his focus to the water and barrier crown at the World Athletics championships that will be held from 19th to 27th August in Budapest, Hungary.
The 20 year-old feels it’s time that the country reclaims its status in the steeplechase race, “I am aggressively working on my shape ahead of the world championships in Budapest. That is my major focus this year and hope for good result,” said Serem.
He said that losing both world championships and Olympic Games 3,000m steeplechase titles to Moroccan Soufiane El Bakkali, was embarrassing to our heritage.
“We want to return our heritage, the 3,000m steeplechase back home after missing out in two important championships and Olympic Games. Coming here today, I was well prepared to compete in this race because I want to start the 2023 on a high note even after losing the title and coming third, I was satisfied,” said Serem who was third at the Athletics Kenya Central Rift championships held on Saturday at the Lobo Village. He was third in 5:25.0 behind the Lukas Kiprop who cut the tape in a time of 5:18.0 with Vincent Koech taking the second spot in 5:24.5.
The third place finish, made him to be named as a reserve runner in relays ahead of National Cross Country championships that will be held at Ruiru this coming weekend.
