Kenya’s Alfred Kipchirchir took the top honors at the 15th edition of the Verona half Marathon that was held on Sunday (1) in Verona, Italy.
Kipchirchir came to this race with the fastest time of 59:43 that he got last year at the Madrid Half Marathon where he finished in fourth place, took charge of the race at the 18km mark as he took on his compatriots Rodgers Maiyo, Bernard Musau Wambua and Nowicki Adam from Poland who stuck with the three.
The 28 year-old accelerated from the 20km mark and leaving the three behind as they could not keep up with the pace, forging ahead to cut the tape with the second fastest time of 1:00.57 and missing the course record with thirty four seconds.
“The race was good and I am happy with the win though i did not run the time that I wanted,” said Kipchirchir.
Kipchirchir who is placed as the 161st in the All Time list over distance was followed a distant later by Adam who crossed the line in a time of 1:02.51 with Bernard Wambua Musau who came with the second fastest time on paper of 1:01.55 forced to settle in third place in a time of 1:02.57.
Poland’s Kamil Karbowiak and Peter Mwaniki Njeru from Kenya came home in fourth and fifth place in a time of 1:03.33 and 1:03.53 respectively.
The race course record of 1:00.24 that was set in 2017 by Edwin Koech from Kenyan remain standing.
