Six times Africa champion and Commonwealth Games medalist Grace Wanjiru blazed the trail in the World Masters Athletics trials in the women’s 10,000m walk to victory at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani in Nairobi.
Wanjiru who also holds the African record a time she set during the Delhi Commonwealth Games in 2010 where she won a bronze walked to a time of 46:37.05 for the deserved win.
Wanjiru ranked 32nd in the world said she used the event to prepare for the forthcoming Africa Senior Athletics Championships in Asaba, Nigeria later this month but will still duty if she is selected to join the team for the World Masters in Spain.
National heptathlon record holder Caroline Kola won the women’s long jump and shot by managing 3.75m and 10.13m respectively.
Africa 200m and 4x100m relay record holder Joyce Odhiambo sprinted to a 100m win by timing 16.0.
The 2002 and 2010 Commonwealth Games 5000m bronze medallist Innes Chenonge made it a double by winning in the women’s 10,000m a day after winning in 5000m.
Chenonge clocked 17:31.01 subjected Wangare who is also a four-time winner of the 20 kilomètres de Maroilles to another second place finish in a time of 17:3806 in the 5000m event.
The Afrika Mashariki Fest Half Marathon champion Willy Mwangi won the men’s 10,00m race by returning 30:54.09 ahead of Haroun Kiprugut in 32:55.05.
The event was used to select a team that will represent Kenya in the World Masters Athletics Championship in Malaga, Spain slated for September 4-16.
Masters Athletics Championship are designed for retired athletes from the age of 40 onwards for both men and women.
