Kenya’s Betty Chepkwony took the top honors at the 42nd edition of the Rome Marathon held on Sunday (19) in Rome, Italy.
The 28 year-old who came to this race with a lifetime best of 2:30.21 that she got in 2021 at the Instanbul Marathon, where she finished in eighth place, waited patiently behind Ethiopia’s Fozya Jemal and Zinash Getachew till the 40km mark where she accelerated with a high gear leaving the two as they could not respond to her kick, cutting the tape in huge a personal best of 2:23.01 cutting seven minutes from her previous best.
Ethiopia’s Jemal had no other option but to settle in second place as she crossed the finish line with over two minutes later in 2:25.08 with her compatriot Getachew closing the podium three finishes in 2:25.58.
The race course record of 2:22.52 that was set in 2019 by Ethiopia’s Alemu Megertu remains standing.
