World silver medallist Cross Country Champion, Vincent Rono from Kenya will headline the 14th edition of the Atapuera Cross Country Championships that will be held on Sunday (110 in Atapuera, Spain.
The 27 year-old will face one of the strongest fields ever assembled at this event by Spanish Athletics Federation, which has been refered as as the best cross ever held in Spain.
There are five athletes with a great potential that increase, even more, that select group of African athletes who will meet again in what is considered by the Spanish Athletics Federation as the best cross of all those held in Spain.
The defending champion and African silver medallist Championships, Getaneh Molla from Ethiopia will also be on the start line up as he tries to fight and defend his title.
The 2017 World 5000m champion, Muktar Edris, has also been lined up for the battle as he fights for the top honors. Uganda will be represented by Timothy Toroitich, who is also a bronze medallist in 10000m race from the recent African Championships that were held in Asaba, Nigeria.
Edris , who made sixth in the world championship of cross in 2017, will try to improve the sixth position in which ended last year with a time of 25:07, the same as Imane Merga, the five-time champion of Atapuerca, that was fifth. In 2015 and 2016 editions he finished in fourth and second respectively.
For his part, Toroitich, who finished ninth in the world championship of cross 2017, also knows the cross in Burgos where he also finished in ninth position last year. He was second in 2016 and 2015, and third in 2014.
The young Stanley Waithaka will be making his debut. The Kenyan runner, current World Junior runner-up in the 5000m, will be one of the men to consider as he arrives in a very great shape and hopes to turn the tables.
Also targeting the podium are Birhanu Balew who is the 5000m World Ranking leader and 2013 Arab Champion gold medallist Albert Rop Kenyan born but trades for Bahrain.
The permanent circuit of the Atapuerca CAREX will be noticeably different from previous editions since three natural obstacles and three trunks have been introduced.
