Bahrain’s Eunice Chumba lived to her expectations when she broke the course record at the 15th edition of the Blom Bank Beirut Marathon that was held on Sunday (13) in Beirut, Lebanon.
The 24 year-old who recently set an Asian record of 1:06.11 at the Copenhagen Half Marathon and two weeks ago surprised a strong field when she won the Lisbon Half Marathon with a time of 1:08.48.
Chumba who switched to Bahrain came to this race with a personal best of 2:24.27 that she got at Rotterdam Marathon early this year.
The Nandi County born athlete who is coached by Nicholas Kipkemoi Kirwa lowered the course record of 2:29:12 that was set in 2014 by Ethiopian Mulahabt Tsega by almost a minute when she cut the tape in a new course record of 2:28.38.
Chumba was followed closely by the defending champion Girma Tigist from Ethiopia who came with a season best of 2:32.15 that she got at Lanzhou Marathon when she crossed the line in 2:29.00 with third place going to another Ethiopian Debebe Getachew who closed the podium three with 2:30.31.
Ukrain’s Olga Skrypak and Motu Gedefa from Ethiopia finished fourth and fifth respectively in 2:31.30 and 2:32.56 respectively.
