Kenya’s Shedrack Kimaiyo and Joan Kigen were the top stars at the 6th edition of the Gabon Marathon that was held on Sunday (2) in Libreville, Gabon.
The 26 year-old who came to this race with a personal best of 2:12.52 that he got at the 2017 Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon where he finished in second place, led a 1-2 Kenyan podium finish.
Kimaiyo has never won any race in the five marathons that he has participated in and this win meant a lot to him as he battled his fellow Kenyan Hosea Kiplagat and Uganda’s Bernard Cheptoch.
Kimaiyo dropped the two at the final stages as he chased his first vcareer marathon victory cutting the tape in 2:19.40.
Kipkemboi came in second place when he crossed the line in 2:21.02 with Ugandan spoiling the Kenyan podium party sealing the first three places in 2:21.26.
Another Kenyan Evans Biwott finished in fourth place in 2:23.23.
Defending champion Peter Kurui finished in a disappointing sixth place in 2:29.39.
In the women race Joan Kigen defended her title as she walloped her fellow Kenyans when she cut the tape in 2:40.26.
The 33 year-old led a 1-2-3-4 Kenyan podium finish as she was followed a distant later Zeddy Limo who crossed the line three minutes later.
Pauline Mutua closed the first three podium finishes in 2:43.58 while Beatrice Cherop took fourth place in 2:48.23.
The first Gabonese crossed the finish line 3:12.53.
