Kenya’s Philomena Cheyech will be the star to watch at the 38th edition of the Valencia Marathon that will be held on Sunday (2) in Valencia, Spain.
Cheyech who debuted in marathon in 2012 and has participated in over fifteen marathon of which she has won seven of them and has twenty seven career wins.
The 36 year-old comes to this race with a personal best of 2:21.22 that she got at the 2017 Paris Marathon where she finished in third place.
The West Pokot born athlete and the 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist will have an uphill task as she will battle for honors with the defending champion Aberu Zennebe from Ethiopia.
The 35 year-old who has a personal best of 2:25.30 that she got at the 2015 Ottawa marathon, won the last year’s edition in 2:26.17 and she is very hopeful of repeating the same.
Two more Ethiopians, Meseret Mengistu Biru and Tinbit Gidey Weldegebriel will be on the battle front when the gun strikes as they also seek to unseat the defending champion and the Kenyan.
Mengistu has a personal best of 2:23.26 that she got at the 2015 Paris Marathon where she took the top honors. On the other hand Weldegebriel carries on her shoulder a personal best of 2:28.15 that she got at the 2015 Hangzhou marathon. Hayimanot Alemayehu Shewe also from Ethiopia will be on the start line up as she fights for the podium finish. She has a pb of 2:25.51.
Meanwhile, the debut of Meseret Tola and Buze Kejela, as well as the presence of the veteran Italian runner Valeria Straneo, will add further interest.
The race organizers put together strong women elite runners to try and lower the race course record of 2:24.48 that was set in 2016 by Valary Jameli Aiyabei from Kenya.
