European 10,000m champion Lonah Chemtai lived to her expectations as she broke the race course record at the35th edition of the Florence Marathon that was held on Sunday (25) in Firenze, Italy.
The Kenyan born now trading as a French citizen smashed the course record of 2:28.15 that was set in 2002 by Helena Javornik from Slovenia.
She faced a stiff challenge from Kenyan Caroline Jepchirchir Chepkwony who came to this race with a superior time time than hers of 2:27.37 that she got in Lubljana in 2013.
Chemtai could not be deterred by the experienced Kenyan when she smashed the previous course with almost four minutes setting a new course record of 2:24.16.
Chepkwony came in a distant second in 2:30.46 with Clementine Mukandanga from Rwanda closing the first three podium finishes in 2:30.59.
