Commonwealth Games 5,000m champion Hellen Obiri and Emmanuel Bett were the winners of the Athletics Kenya Cross country meeting that was held on Saturday (1) in Ol Kalou, Nyandarua County.
Obiri, the world 5,000m champion won the 10km senior race timing 33:37.3 while Bett won the men’s title in 29:45.8.
Coming from the Kenya Defence Forces and Kenya Police, Obiri and Bett started the Christmas month on a high as they prepare for world cross country championships in Denmark next year.
Obiri beat Beatrice Mutai to second place in 33:55.4 before 2017 World Cross Country silver medallist Alice Aprot came in third in 34:14.0.
Bett relegated Leonard Kirui to second in 29:47.3 as Shadrack Kimutai stopped the clock in 29:50.2 to settle third.
World Under-18 and Under-20 800m silver medallist, Lydia Jeruto and upstart Gideon Rono were the 6km and 8km junior women and men winners repsctively.
Jeruto romped into victory in 20:26.2 to brush aside Dolphine Omari in 20:30.5 and Quarline Kiprop came in third in 20:32.3
In men’s 8km Rono clocked 23:37.4 to win ahead of Kelvin Biwott in 23:46.0 as Gedion Kipketer in 23:51.5.
