Ethiopia’s Getaneh Molla beat a strong field that included world beaters as he won the 14th edition of the Cross International de Atapuerca that was held on Sunday (12) in Atapuerca, Spain.
Molla who is the 2015 Africa Games gold medallist did not find it easy going as Uganda’s 16 year-old 2016 and World U20 Cross Country Jacob Kiplimo almost snatched the 9km title from him as he led the better part of the last but Molla kicked with 150m to the tape to cut it 24:45 with Kiplimo crossing the line a second later.
Eritrea’s Aron Kifle closed the podium finish with 24:55 that surprised many when he beat Aweke Ayalew of Bahrain and Imane Merga of Ethiopia who crossed the line in 25:02 and 25:07 respectively.
World 5000m Champion Muktar Edris found the going tough as he finished a distant sixth in 25:11.
Kenyan duo of Justus Soget and title favorite Jairus Birech finished disappointing seventh and tenth place in 25:12 and 25:25 respectively.
