Kenya’s Flomena Cheyech made history as she successfully defended her title at the 3rd edition of the Saitama International Marathon that was held on Sunday (12) in Saitama, Japan.
Cheyech who arrived coming from a fourth place finish at the World Championships London 2017. The 2014 Commonwealth champion, Cheyech came with a personal best of 2:21:22 set at the 2017 Paris Marathon.
The 35 year-old won the last year edition with a record breaking time of 2:23:18 but could not lower it today as she crossed the line in five minutes short of the record time.

Bahrain’s Shitaye Eshete Habtegebrel who was sixth at 10,000m in the 2011 and 2013 World Championships as well as the 2012 Olympic Games where she produced her 10,000m best of 30:47.25 could not run her PB of 2:25:36 she got at the 2016 Dubai marathon when she crossed the line in second three seconds later in 2:28.42.
Ethiopia’s Bekelech Daba closed the podium three in 2:30.42.
Great Britain’s Charlotte Purdue who came with a personal best of 2:29:23 that she got at this year’s London Marathon came in fourth place with 2:30.34
Another Kenyan Philes Ongori of Kenya who was the second fastest runner on paper at this race and came with a personal best of 2:23:22 finished a distant sixth place in 2:32.00.
