World 5000m champion Hellen Obiri is the inaugural of Sports Personality of the Month Award courtesy of StarTimes.
The 27 year-old was the second StarTimes Sports Personlaity Award for the month of August.
She walked away with a StarTimes 40 inch digital television set, a trophy and cash prize of Ksh. 100,000.
“Am greatful to God for being recognize by Startimes and I will continue to work hard and win more medals for my country Kenya,” said the delighted Obiri,
It is our hope as StarTimes that we can continue to positively influence our sports men and women.
Obiri became the first Kenyan to win the 5,000m series since Mercy Cherono in 2014.
She has been nominated to the 2017 World Athletes of the Year Award that will be held in Monaco, Italy. She is facing the World and Olympic 10,000m record holder Almaz Ayana, whom she beat in London as well as Olympic 800m champion Caster Semenya of South Africa.
Kenya journalists group in an umbrella of Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) selects the winner.
“In the past you have only been organising awards for footballers but the move to award other disciplines shows you value all sports,” he added.
SJAK chairman Chris Mbaisi called on all sportsmen and women to continue working hard in their respective disciplines.
“This is another milestone for sports in the country and this award will go a long way in improving the well-being of our sportsmen and women,” Mbaisi said.
StarTimes Director of Marketing and Public Relations Japheth Akulia lauded Obiri for his scintillating display in Turkey, challenging other sports persons to follow suit.
