Kenyan Gladys Cherono will be looking to make a mark at this 43rd edition of the Roma Ostia Half Marathon that will be held on Sunday (2) in the province of Rome, Italy.
The 33 year old became the first woman to win both the 5000m and 10,000m at the African Championships in 2012. She’s in the top 10 list of fastest women of all time in both half marathon and marathon distances.
Cherono won the Berlin Marathon in 2015 with her career best of 2:19:25. She also has 1:06:07 half marathon credentials from Ras Al Khaimah in 2016.
At Ostia she will face fellow Kenyan women led by Angela Tanui who was second at last year’s race crossing the tape with a time of 1:07.16 behind the eventual winner Ethiopian Debele Degefa who cut the tape with a time of 1:07.24.
Another favorite contender is the Singapore Marathon winner Rebecca Chesir who comes to the race with a personal 1:08.21.
The Iten based athlete who hails from Marakwet County and is coached by coach Elijah Ngeywo had a very success season last year with her body being in great shape that allowed her to compete in three major races.
She won the Iten Cross Country Championships; she was placed third at Toronto Waterfront marathon in a race that was won by Ethiopian Shure Demise in a time of 2:28.19 with Chesir Coming home with 2:28.54.
Ethiopia will be represented by Aselech Mergia who in 2011 clocked the fastest time of her career at the Dubai marathon when she cut the tape with a time of 2:19.31.
She was a bronze medalist in the event at the 2009 world championships in Berlin. She is a two-time winner of the Dubai Marathon in 2011 and 2012 and has finished second in Paris Marathon with 2:25.02 in the top three at the Paris and London Marathon in 2016 finishing third with 2:23.57
The 2005 winner of the Ostia half Italian Rosaria Console will be back in the race to try and claim a podium finish after racing at the same race for seven times. She has won once and came second in 2003 in a time of 1:09.34
