Two times Olympic 10,000m Champion Ethiopian Haile Gebreslassie will be the chief guest at this year’s Soya Awards ceremony.
Speaking during the launch of the Soya Awards ceremony on Tuesday morning, former world marathon record holder Paul Tergat said, “Gebreslassie, the four world 10,000m gold medalist will be the chief guest at the awards as they recognize homegrown sports personalities in the country.
We want to recognize sports personalities in the country and Haile is one of the most respected and recognized athletes across the world. Him awarding our sports men and women will be an honour for our heroes,” said Tergat.
He added that 2016 was an interesting sporting year though faced with many challenges especially in Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in Brazil.
“Despite all the challenges that athletes went through in various sporting disciplines, they endured and delivered in their disciplines therefore we have to recognize, honour and please them ahead of the new season,” added Tergat.
The gala will take place on 20th January 2017 at Carnivore Ground, Nairobi.
He said, time has come for sports people to take up leadership in various positions. He said Kenya has good sports men and women who ave great reputation and should be in front line in leadership.
The 43 year old retired running legend Gebreslassie who is Ethiopia’s greatest ever runner, winning two Olympic and four world titles in a career that spanned over 20 years.
“we are bringing in Haile because he is an outstanding athlete who has now taken up Ethiopian Athletics President’s position. So he is a man of great influence across the world,” added Tergat.
