The 29-year-old who was not the race favorite crossed the finish line in a time of 2:13.03 almost four minutes shy of the race favorite Jackson Limo who set the course record in 2014 with a time of 2:11.04.
Abebe Gizachew of Ethiopian came in second with a time of 2:14.06 while the race favorite and defending champion Limo finished in third position with 2:15.02
Limo told the press after coming in third, “ I was expecting to defend my title but unfotunately I didn’t. Am happy with the results. At 35km I tried to push but I had a stitch that prevented me to push further”
The race attracted over 50,000 participants and was started at Martyrs Square by IAAF president Sebastian Coe as its official starter.
