The University of Eldoret Cross Country which is in its 26th edition will take place this Saturday (22) at the Eldoret University grounds.
“More than 1000 athletes are expected to participate in this race considering the previous races we have held in the past years,” said Kibet Rono, the Local Organising Committee secretary.
The race organizers have indicated that the defending champions Cleophas Ng’etich and Valarie Jemeli have confirmed that they will participate in both races for men and women.
Ng’etich the Tennessee cross country runner, last year took the men’s title crossing the tape with a time of 29:38.30 in the 12k race and Jemeli took to the women podium with a time of 27:18.4 in the 8k race.
Andrew Lorot the former Africa Cross Country Champion won the 8km race last year with a time of 23:35.04, while Gladys Jemaiyo won the 6km Junior race with a time of 20:44.09.
In senior category of 8km Viola Jepchumba took the pole position with a time of 28:24.19 while men category of 12km went to Philip Tarbei with 30:38.02
“Registration will be done early in the morning on the same day and individual athletes pay Sh200 registration fee while children pay Sh50,” said, Rono.
We expect a huge turnout of athletes because preparations for the world cross country have already started”.
Apart from the senior and junior (men and women), there will be also 10km and 8km for University students while Kids will also take part in 1km races.
Elderly groups will feature in the 2-km race.
