The Kenya women’s marathon team for Rio Olympics will go out in full swing to claim what they call their position in the world of Women Marathon.
The team aims to win the country’s first Olympics gold medal at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Kenya has one of the best team in the training camp, Paris Marathon champion Visiline Jepkesho, Tokyo Marathon champion Hela Kiprop and London Marathon champion Jemima Sumgong.
Victory in Rio will certainly depend on which athlete best deals with the heat and humidity.Team work will be a major component in our team. For us to be on the podium we must work and run as a team in Rio, said the Paris Marathon Champion Visiline Jepkesho when asked how what their strategy is to come home with the medals.
“It’s a hard task ahead of us but we will do our best to make sure we strip Ethiopians of the gold medal and if possible win all the three medals,” said Jepkesho. Ethiopian Tiki Gelana won the title at the 2012 2012 Summer Olympics in London, with Prisca Jeptoo taking silver and Russian Tatyana Petrova Arkhipova taking bronze.
Jepkesho reckons the team has prepared well for the challenge ahead as they wait to leave for Rio next week.
“We have finished with the hard part of training and what we are doing now is fine-tuning as we wait to go to Rio. We know competition is tight and everybody will be eyeing glory but we hope to perform well,” said Jepkesho.
“It’s great honour to be named in the team. Since it will be my first time to be at the Olympic Games, I want to do my best,” said the athlete who hails from Kapsabet, Nandi County.
“We will give all our best to come home with all the three medals, she concluded”.
